The Ghana Association of Social Workers formally came into being in 1972 after a number of Social Workers had come together in the 1960s to promote Social Work and Social Development in the country. The Association was registered as a Professional Body in April 1986.
The founders of the Association include Dr. Blavo and Professor Nana Araba Apt, who was the first Secretary of the Association.
To promote, develop and sponsor activities appropriate to the strengthening and unification of the profession while promoting the highest standard of Social Work through the maintenance of ethical conduct and discipline of the Profession.
To create an influential Professional body of Social Workers in Ghana as a basis for concrete and meaningful profession under which alone social workers can approach their work guided by a code of Ethics and achieve recognition as a body in the service of the nation.
